Some of our products, such as the Mult-e-Maths strands and Scientific Enquiry, require Macromedia Flash Player to be installed on your PC. Our most recently published products will install Flash Player automatically. Other, older products may require you to install Flash Player manually. You can download Flash Player from the Macromedia web site.

You will need to have administrator rights on the computer or network that you are trying to install the program onto. Please check with your ICT co-ordinator that you have the appropriate access privileges.

I have tried to install a Cambridge-Hitachi product a number of times but it isn't working properly.

During the installation process entries may be written to the Windows registry. If the process was interrupted, the next time the installer is run, it may believe the product is already on your PC. In this case, the relevant registry entries must be removed before running the installation program again.

Please call our technical support team on 01223 325040 if you think this problem could be affecting you.

N.B. It is not recommended to edit the Windows registry unless you are a qualified ICT Technician.

I have recently installed Apple's Quicktime 7, and now my Cambridge Hitachi product does not work properly.

The Cambridge Hitachi products Experiment Simulator, Human Body Systems and Storybook Phonics are produced with an authoring program called Macromedia Director. Director and Quicktime 7 have a known conflict that is under investigation by the companies concerned. Until this conflict is resolved we do not recommend using QuickTime 7.

I have installed a Cambridge-Hitachi product but when I try and access the teacher's notes or planning sheets they will not open.

Some of our products contain worksheets or planning documents that are in Adobe's PDF format. To open these files, you will need to have Adobe Reader installed on your PC. This can be downloaded from the web, free of charge, by visiting the Adobe website.

I have been trying to open a PDF worksheet but I cannot access it. I do have Adobe Reader installed.

In some cases, if you have more than one version of Adobe Reader installed on your computer, PDF files will not open. Remove any older versions of Adobe Reader on your PC leaving only the most up-to-date one.

The installation process prompts me for a serial number. Where can I find this?

Some Cambridge-Hitachi products ask for a serial number as part of the installation process. You can find this information either in the booklet which accompanies the CD ROM, or on the back cover of the CD case.

I am using Flash Player 8, and find that some elements of the product are not working.

If you are using Flash Player 8, you may find that its enhanced security settings stop some elements of your Cambridge-Hitachi product from working. For example, buttons may appear to do nothing when you click on them. This is because Flash Player 8's security settings will only allow trusted content to play. There is a quick and easy way to set up Flash Player 8 always to trust content from Cambridge-Hitachi:

  • 1. Go to Macromedia website to access the Macromedia Flash Player Settings Manager.
The program runs within the web page, so you won't need to download anything. All you need to do is follow these instructions:
  • 2. Go to the Global Security Settings tab.
  • 3. Click on the "Edit locations..." dropdown and choose "Add location...".
  • 4. Click on the "Browse for folder..." button and browse to C:\Program Files\CambridgeHitachi (NB - the folder may also be named Cambridge-Hitachi or Cambridge Hitachi).
  • 5. Click "OK".

Your Cambridge-Hitachi products should now work correctly.

To check if you have Flash Player 8 installed, right-click in a product that uses Flash. You will see a menu with "About Macromedia Flash Player X..." at the bottom. This will tell you which version of Flash you are using.

Are Cambridge-Hitachi products Windows Vista compatible?

Prior to the release of Windows Vista, Cambridge-Hitachi worked closely with development partners to ensure as far as possible that new services are Vista compliant, and that fixes are made available to products already on the market. This means that a significant number of Cambridge-Hitachi titles are Vista compliant.

Unfortunately, resource limitations mean that it is not possible to guarantee compliance in every case. Please consult the FAQ of each individual product to determine whether it is Windows Vista compatible or not.
