Environmental management
We recognise that our activities, products or services may have an effect on the environment. It is our aim to reduce that effect to a minimum, by implementing an effective system for managing our environmental impact.
Our policy on environmental management
We regularly assess the significance of our actions on the environment, and as a result we have set objectives and targets relating to our operations. We continually strive to:
- prevent or reduce greenhouse gas emissions and other pollutants;
- minimise consumption of natural resources and energy;
- reduce, reuse or recycle wastes;
- meet or surpass applicable regulatory and other requirements;
- adopt best practice guidance in our operations and activities where feasible; and
- promote our environmental policy among our employees, our suppliers, our customers, our local community, our University and others in our industry.
This policy applies to all of our activities, products and services.
Our environmental achievements
- In 2011 we retained registration to ISO 14001, the International Environmental Management standard, having first gained certification in 2007.
- In 2010 we achieved the UK Carbon Trust Standard and in 2012 we retained the certification.
- During the financial year 2011/12 greenhouse gas emissions for the Cambridge site decreased to 5,132 tonnes of CO2 equivalent – 10% below the level of the previous reporting year. Our goal is to reduce carbon emissions by an average of 2.5% annually.
-
In 2011 we established a conservation area on our site in Cambridge. Volunteers have given over 350 hours to the wildlife conservation project. It has become a successful wildlife corridor, with a wide array of sightings including deer, bats, butterflies, birds, shrews and badgers. In 2012, the Wildlife Trust awarded the project the Wildlife Gardening at Work Award.
- In 2011 we launched the car sharing scheme called LiftShare, which helps staff save on travel costs, cuts carbon and reduces local congestion.
-
In 2011, 1044 tonnes (87%) of waste was recycled compared to 156 tonnes (13%) sent to landfill.
-
Our staff have been volunteering on Wildlife Trust nature reserves since 2008, taking part in activities like coppicing, fencing, hedge laying and hay strewing, encouraging sustainability and diversity of plant and animal life. Staff have given thousands of hours to Wildlife Trust projects since the volunteering programme began.
- The Press achieved FSC and PEFC certification in 2006.
